Idemitsu Kosan to Build a Facility for SPS Production in Malaysia
SPS (syndiotactic polystyrene) resin is an engineering plastic, Idemitsu succeeded in synthesizing in 1985 for the first time in the world. The company industrialized the product in 1997. Its original technology has made the efficient product, which features “melting point of 270°”, “resistance to heat and water”, “insulation “ and “ radio wave permeability”. Demands have risen as it is used in making auto parts including EV and antennas for high-speed 5G telecom devices.
The company has chosen Johor Bahru as the site is petrochemical products manufacturing base and produces styrene monomer, one of the raw materials for SPS resin, as well as the location in Southeast Asia where is anticipating increases in demand for SPS.
The site planned for construction is at Idemitsu Johor Bahru site, Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru. The production capacity is 9,000 tons/year. It is expected to begin commercial operation in August 2022.
